Callistemon All Aglow
PBR Name: Ramboglow
A stunning bottlebrush with luminous-pink new growth and bright pinky-red brushes. It is an upright shrub growing to around 2.5m tall and is naturally compact and free branching. Expect full flowering in the plant’s second year. Try All Aglow as an informal hedge. It's not only colourful, it attracts birds and provides habitat for smaller native birds. Callistemon, better known bottlebrush, are one of the iconic native flowering plant families. They are tough plants, handling heat, cold, many soil types and don’t need much in the way of care. These are plants that suit today’s busy lifestyles. They’re an excellent choice for low-maintenance, waterwise gardens
Height to 2.5m
Width to 1m
Planting: Plant preferably in a full sun position for best flower production. Callistemon are tolerant of a wide range of soil types, but like most woody natives, are going to perform better in well drained soils. Can be used as a feature garden plant, a privacy screen or hedge when planted in multiples. Sieberi Yellow is a little different in that it has a weeping habit and tolerates wet feet, so it’s a good choice for that soggy bit of the backyard. Plant at 1.2m intervals.
Watering: These native Callistemon are well adapted to Australia’s often harsh climate. They don’t need any supplementary watering once established. Mulching is a good idea to keep the soil cool and to reduce evaporation.
Fertiliser: Feed in autumn and spring with a general purpose, controlled release fertiliser to promote good plant health and promote flowering. They are not phosphorus sensitive, so you won’t have to use a native plant fertiliser.
Pruning: If pruning is necessary, you may cut the plant back reasonably hard but do so after flowering. If you are growing a hedge, trim regularly until desired height is reached, then trim a couple of times a year to maintain shape.
Pests and Diseases: Can be attacked by caterpillars or saw flies in autumn. Not shown susceptibility to myrtle rust incursion. Refer to your specialist plant retailer for advice on ways to manage any problems.
