Chrysocephalum Silver & Gold

Category: Chrysocephalum

Chrysocephalum apiculatum

An aptly named plant given its beautiful colour contrast between the silvery foliage topped by bright yellow, button-like flower clusters. This variety is a mat-forming ground cover plant that is long flowering and can still look great with minimal watering. Can be used in hanging baskets, pots and gardens including banks and retaining walls. It forms into a thick carpet it suits weed suppressing, ground cover situations.

Width to 1m

Planting
Plant in a sunny position in well drained soil. If drainage is poor, such as in most clay soils, build up your garden bed to provide good drainage. Due to its tolerance of salty air, this plant is suitable for planting in coastal regions.
Watering
Silver & Gold is able to withstand periods without watering, however, extra irrigation at the time of flower bud formation will benefit flowering performance. If possible, keep the plant moist in dry conditions to encourage new growth.
Fertiliser
Chrysocephalum is not especially phosphorus sensitive, so you needn’t necessarily have to use a native plant fertiliser. Feed in autumn and spring with a small amount of controlled release fertiliser around the base of the plant to promote good plant health.
Pruning
There’s no real need to prune this plant unless you want to shape it. Old flowers deadhead easily and are covered by subsequent new flowering stems.
Pests and Diseases
Silver & Gold is an easy-care plant that rarely suffers pest and disease problems. You may see caterpillars munching on flower buds and leaves or aphids enjoying time with new shoots. Watch out for evidence of slugs and snails. As always, if you see a problem and need advice, see your specialist plant retailer for more information.
